Description

Mountmellick is a traditional Irish hand embroidery technique inspired by nature. Worked in a variety of white threads on white fabric, it uses the contrast between different stitches and thread textures to bring embroidery to life. This relaxed, welcoming workshop offers the time to step away from the busyness of everyday life, spend an afternoon being creative and discover a beautiful heritage embroidery technique. Whether you're looking to develop your embroidery skills, find inspiration in nature or enjoy some time making alongside like-minded people, you'll be encouraged to explore and develop confidence in your own creativity. During the workshop, you'll design and stitch your own nature-inspired Mountmellick embroidery, creating a piece that could later be framed, made into a greetings card or another creative project. We'll begin by exploring the history of Mountmellick work, before looking at fabric and thread choices and ways to transfer a design to fabric. No drawing skills are needed, and you'll have the freedom to choose a design. There will be embroidered samples to look at. Through a combination of demonstrations and individual guidance, you'll learn a selection of embroidery stitches at a pace that suits you. There's time to practise, ask questions and discover how different stitches and threads can bring your design to life. You'll be supported throughout, with encouragement to make the work your own rather than simply follow instructions. You'll leave with your own piece of embroidery, new skills to build on and the confidence to continue exploring the technique at home. Who is it for? This workshop is suitable for all levels of embroidery experience, including complete beginners. All materials are provided. Venue and practical information The workshop takes place at The Weigh To Shop, Durham on March 14th, from 2-5pm. Parking is available outside and nearby. There is a small step into the venue, a toilet and plenty of natural light. The workshop will be capped at 8 people to ensure everyone receives lots of guidance. The shop will be closed during the workshop, giving you time to browse and stock up on supplies if you wish. Refreshments are not provided, but you are welcome to purchase drinks and other refreshments from the café. As the venue has a café, outside food and drink cannot be brought in. Free tickets are available for carers who do not take part in workshop activity. Please contact me to arrange prior to the workshop.
