Description

Weaving with jeans is a sustainable way to be more creative; taking old jeans that are ripped, torn or no longer fit and turning them into something practical or decorative. This relaxed, welcoming workshop offers the time to step away from the busyness of everyday life and spend an afternoon being creative. Whether you're looking to develop your textile skills, find inspiration in re-using fabrics or enjoy some time making alongside like-minded people, you'll be encouraged to explore, experiment and develop confidence in your own creativity. During the workshop you’ll explore using old jeans to weave with. You may choose to weave more practical items such as coasters or to make a more creative piece including weaving for framed. We’ll explore how to set up a very simple loom, how to make a loom from a photo frame so you can continue after the workshop and how to create simple weaving patterns. Finally, we’ll look at combining jeans with yarns and threads when weaving. Through a combination of demonstrations and individual guidance, you'll learn different weaving techniques at a pace that suits you. There's time to practise, ask questions and discover different patterns and yarns. You'll be supported throughout, with encouragement to make the work your own rather than simply follow instructions. You'll leave with your own unique woven pieces, new skills to build on and the confidence to continue exploring the technique at home, along with fresh creative inspiration. This workshop is suitable for all levels of textiles experience, including complete beginners. All materials are provided – if you have any jeans, denim or threads you would like to use please feel free to bring them with you. Venue and practical information The workshop takes place at The Weigh To Shop, Durham on January 24th, from 2-5pm. Parking is available outside and nearby. There is a small step into the venue, a toilet and plenty of natural light. The workshop will be capped at 8 people to ensure everyone receives lots of guidance and time. The shop will be closed during the workshop, giving you time to browse and stock up on supplies if you wish. Refreshments are not provided, but you are welcome to purchase drinks and other refreshments from the café. As the venue has a café, outside food and drink cannot be brought in. Free tickets are available for carers who do not take part in workshop activity. Please contact me to arrange prior to the workshop.
